I used to work for a Destination Management Company (DMC). They worked a liaison between tour operators all over the world and travel agents across America. The DMC doesn’t work with the direct public, their clientele is strictly travel agents.
When people ask me what the company does, I found the best explanation is to say that they’re “the travel agent’s travel agent”. Most the time I get a confused look which is often followed with the question,“Travel agents are still a thing?”
This assumption seems to be wide spread, but in fact, travel agencies are not just alive and well, but thriving.
Tourism has continued to boom as flights become cheaper and travel options have become varied and endless. I dare you to log onto Facebook for longer than a few minutes without seeing a friend post about a trip they’re on, an article about a tour destination, or a you-can’t-miss-this travel deal. So I wrote this post for any of you who are wondering why working with a travel agent is still a thing.
Here’s 6 ways using a travel agent will make your vacation better:
Travel Agent Save You Money
Yes, you pay a travel agent to work with you. But even with the fee, they will often ultimately save you money. Did you know that travel agents get the inside scoop and better travel deals than anyone? Hotels, escorted tours, airlines, and tour operators reserve their very best deals for travel agents because they are the guaranteed audience who will be more likely to actually book their offer.
As someone who has worked in the industry of booking people’s vacations, I can’t tell you how many people I know who found a “deal” online without reading the fine print. They may have found great priced flights, but didn’t see that they have to pay for their seat and any checked bags. Which ultimately ends up costing more than the normal price of the flight. And that’s just one of the many examples where a “deal” isn’t always a good one.
Protect You From Scams
On the surface it may appear that traveling is easier than ever. Which is true, but it’s also become more complicated and the amount of scammers posting “great deals” are rising. Countless scammers are on the hunt looking for a naive wanderluster in search of a good deal.
Imagine trying to weed through all the possible destinations, cruises, hotels, and tours to find the one you want. You fork over potentially thousands of dollars just to fly halfway across the world to find out it doesn’t actually exist. Ouch. I can guarantee that won’t happen to you if you book through a travel agent.
Simplify the Process
Trying to narrow down the list of cruise lines, countries, escorted or non escorted tours, and hotel to choose from is a full time job in itself. Reading about exotic locations is exciting, trying to figure out the logistics of getting between all the places you want to see and time out your trip is a little more difficult.
Your travel agent will let you know what flights, trains, ferries, roads, or cruises you need to take to get to where you want.
They can help you narrow down the vast amount of options you’re faced with when it comes to booking your trip. Leave all the research, review reading, and price matching to them so all you have to do is say yes or no.
One of the best things about working with a travel agent is that you can trust them. They are real live, human beings whose entire career revolves around travel. They are your go-to for questions, and have endless amount of experience and resources available to arrange the best trip for you. The trip YOU want.
Save You Time
Have you ever tried to plan an in-depth trip abroad before? If you have, you probably know how time consuming and complicated it can actually be. Especially if you’re not the only one going. Trying to coordinate with members of your travel group is purely exhausting. Travel agent’s have the know-how and the time to do that for you, so you can focus on the fun parts of traveling.
Protect You When the “What if” Happens
They have your back. Blame whatever you want but the truth is, life happens. Employees go on strike, flights are delayed and canceled, natural disasters can’t always be predicted, the list goes on. When something happens while traveling, you want someone to have your back. Your travel agent is your go-to person for support and the know-how to get you the help you need. When you need it. Before, during, and after your trip.
Traveling is often one of the biggest life changing events you can do. There’s a reason the saying “catching the travel bug” exists. It’s addicting, exhilarating, and eye opening to experience places and cultures that are so different from your own. Nothing can ruin a vacation more than the real world. Working with a travel agent will help prevent common mistakes while doing all the dirty work for you so you can focus on experiencing new adventures. Still wondering why travel agents are a thing?
